We handed the mic to Adam, founder of Door to Store, to talk about how he built a local storage business that’s changing the way people think about self storage; with flexible, on-site units designed to make life easier.

What inspired you to start Door to Store?

After nearly 20 years in the removals and storage industry, I realised that the storage side of things was not only the most profitable but also the part customers appreciated the most. That’s what sparked the idea for Door to Store – a business focused entirely on making storage simpler and more convenient.

In the early days, we used trailers that carried wooden storage boxes. We’d deliver them to a customer’s driveway, they’d load them up, and we’d take them back to our warehouse for storage. It worked well, but I kept getting the same request: “Can you leave the trailer here for longer?” Unfortunately, that wasn’t practical at the time – but it got me thinking.

Traditional shipping containers can provide on-site storage, but they’re often bulky and hard to deliver to homes with narrow access, low trees, or overhead cables. And if you want one in your back garden, delivery alone can cost a fortune. I wanted to offer something more flexible and accessible.

That’s when I came across the modular steel storage units we use today – lightweight, secure, and easy to assemble right where the customer needs them. And that’s how Door to Store was born.

Storage isn’t usually something people get excited about. How do you make it simple and stress-free for your customers?

That’s true – no one wakes up thinking, “I can’t wait to sort out my storage today!” 😄 But that’s exactly why we’ve designed Door to Store to be as quick and hassle-free as possible.

Instead of hiring a van, driving back and forth to a depot, and lifting everything in and out multiple times, we bring the storage to you. Our units are flat-packed and assembled right on your driveway, garden, or site – no cranes, no HGVs, no disruption. You can load at your own pace, and your belongings stay right where you need them.

We keep things straightforward with clear pricing, online booking, and flexible hire terms. Whether it’s short-term space during a home project or long-term storage for business use, our goal is to make it all simple, secure, and stress-free from start to finish.

You’ve built Door to Store around trust, reliability, and service. How do those values show up in the way your team works with customers?

For me, trust and reliability aren’t just buzzwords – they’re the foundation of everything we do. When someone hires a unit, they’re trusting us with their belongings, their space, and often their timelines, so I take that personally.

I make sure our team treats every customer the way we’d want to be treated – being punctual, communicating clearly, and keeping our promises. If we say we’ll be there, we’ll be there. And if there’s ever an issue or delay, we’re upfront about it straight away.

We take pride in being friendly, professional, and easy to deal with. There are no hidden extras or fine print – just honest service and a genuine effort to make the whole experience as smooth as possible. I think that’s why so many of our customers come back or recommend us to others.

At the end of the day, it’s about doing things properly and providing a service people can rely on.

Can you share a story of a customer whose experience reminded you why you do what you do?

One that really sticks with me was a family who needed temporary storage while renovating their home. They were living among dust, tools, and half-finished rooms, and the stress was starting to build up. We delivered one of our units to their garden, and within a couple of hours they had space to breathe again – somewhere safe to store their furniture and belongings while they finished the work.

A few weeks later, they sent a message saying how much easier the project had been thanks to the extra space, and how they’d never realised how simple and effective on-site storage could be. It was such a small thing for us, but it made a big difference for them – and that’s exactly why I started Door to Store.

Helping people solve problems and make life a bit easier is what keeps me passionate about what we do.

Running a business like Door to Store must have its challenges. What keeps you grounded and motivated when things get tough?

Running a business definitely has its tough days – things don’t always go to plan, and sometimes it feels like everything hits at once. What keeps me grounded is remembering why I started Door to Store in the first place. I wanted to build something honest, reliable, and genuinely helpful.

Seeing how far we’ve come keeps me going. When I think back to the early days, with just a few units and an idea, and see how much we’ve grown, it reminds me that the hard work pays off. Hearing from customers about how we’ve made their lives easier always gives me that extra boost too.

I also try to make time to switch off – spending time with family or just stepping back helps me keep perspective. At the end of the day, I genuinely enjoy what I do, and that’s what keeps me pushing forward, even when things get tough.
